Developing a Strong Landscape Painting
This two-day workshop is designed to introduce students to techniques for planning and developing a strong landscape painting in acrylic paint. It is designed for any artist who is interested in my approach to interpreting landscape and water.
We will begin with a review of fundamental of composition and values, using a reference photo of the student’s choice. Bring a selection of photos.
We will develop the composition of the painting together through a series of thumbnail sketches, working it up into a full-sized painting. I will demonstrate the development of a strong painting to get us started, and conversation about colour will accompany demonstration and supervisions.
The second day students will continue to work from their reference photo. Demonstrations will be used through out the day to show colour choices. We will end with a final critique and discussion.
Demos will be done in acrylics.
Every time I teach it is new, since my courses are always student driven. The chance to spend extended time with a small group of students will allow us to delve into each person’s own artistic explorations. I help my students to better understand and articulate their own unique visual language.
My palette of Acrylic Paint Colours (I use Golden) (please, not all colours are necessary or required!)
Primary yellow (lemon), Azo Yellow
Pthalo Blue (green shade)
Napthol Red Medium
Permanent Maroon, Alizarin Crimson
Quinacrodone Burnt Orange
I use Princeton Art and Brush Co. Umbria Brights. Bring a variety of sizes and shapes of good quality brushes.
2 or 3 canvases or masonite boards
suggested sizes: 9 x 12 / 12 x 12 / 12 x 16
Masonite should be well-gessoed with GAC100 and acrylic gesso so that it is not too absorbent.
Bring a Portable Easel if you wish. (Anderson makes a good one)
Bring several large reference photos of landscapes that you would like to paint. If you don’t have an inspiring photo, I have many.
Water container (two) I use a corel plate as a palette, available at used stores such as a Re-use store
Spray bottle for water
Acrylic soft gel medium for mixing and extending colour
